Rick We were offered a refund of £732.80 from British Gas but we dont have a British Gas account - has to be a scam. My guess is tha they are forging driving licences, maybe for use in identity fraud. Has anyone reported this to ther Police?

Liz I have also just received this email purporting to come from British Gas. However, a check on the origin showed it was probably bogus. I think that can be confirmed as I am supposed to be getting the same refund as someone who has already posted here. Will report this to British Gas.

Joachim Received the same mail, obviously fraudulent. To the person wondering how it's possible to set the origin as "info@britishgas.co.uk", check the message header. Trying to find a site/number that I can use to report this; using a fax line that must be based in an office in Bristol somewhere is stupid, and these people deserve to be caught.

Scam Detectives This email was sent out to hundreds and thousands of recipients. The email address "info@britishgas.co.uk" is 'spoofed' (ie faked). What they are after is your driving license/passport number in conjunction with your name and address, so they can create forgeries and use them to obtain credit/loans/mobile phones and even benefits in your name. See http://www.scam-detectives.co.uk/blog/2011/03/21/beware-of-british-gas-refund-notifications/ for more information

David Same as the others. How do they manage to use the email address info@Britishgas.co.uk which appears to be one used by the real British Gas?

Paul S Exactly the same as Phil Barry - even the amount. We haven't used BG at the current address even.
