In reply to Alan Carter, he is quite correct. The TPS stops sales and marketing calls. It does not stop market research calls. Quoted from their FAQ (http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/contactfaq.php) - "Telephone Preference Service (TPS) aims to reduce live direct marketing calls and is unable to stop calls from organisations who are conducting research. Genuine research calls are not deemed as direct marketing as they generally relate to information gathering or seeking of opinions whereas the purpose of a direct marketing call would be to sell or market a product or service.". So, annoying? Maybe. Illegal? No.

I read Spencer Wood's comment below on behalf of this organisation and what he said was a lie. Here is the first paragraph of the TPS website:- Welcome We are the Telephone Preference Service The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is the official central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls. It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have your consent to do so.

On Wednesday 11th February 2015 I received a telephone call from a male saying he was from Facts International I thought it was Fax International. He stuttered and stammered his way to saying he was phoning on behalf of my bank ... he asked for me by name and I declined to say if I was aavailable if he could not provide me with the necessary details .. I asked what bank he was calling from and I asked another couple of difficult questions and he was unable to answer and i said if my bank wants to speak with me they will call me and not a third party ... he took fright and hung up. I came off the phone contacted my bank who knew nothing of it and as aresult I contacted the police who gave me the contact phone number for Action Fraud. I reported the matter to them .... I could not believe the audacity of this company as a female contacted me later that evening again saying she was calling on behalf of my bank .... I told her I had contacted the police regarding the earlier call and it didn't seem to put her off... I said you are a bunch of SCAM merchants and this when the phone was put down. I would suggest anyone who has received a telephone call from this company contact Action Fraud on0300-123-2040 and report the matter to them and they will be issued with a Crime Reference Number ... the more complants registered the better as it might deter them or get them closed down ... my main concern is they might contact an elderly man or woman and con the out of their bank details and they lose money as a result of the call ... I watched a programme on TV a few weeks ago and a call centre was closed down and the operators jailed

They are relentless had to end up getting very angry and blocked the number its a research company to to sell crap

  • JennyWren - 11-11-2014 8:18:52PM

They rang me on a number which I specifically keep for family. No-one else should have this number. They hung up just as I answered. I do hope they call again because by the time I have finished with the operative chained to their desk in the hall of misery known as a "callcentre", they will wish they had never been born. I think there should be an opt out for market research such that we are not tormented with these calls. As if any of us has time to answer these questions which are, in any event, only used to profile us as pointed out by others on here.

Call at 8.50pm and at 7pm the next day told to take my number off there data base at this point he hung up on me

  • Richard - 25-6-2014 3:44:00PM

Persistent and irritating. They called my home phone at 3pm purportedly to speak to my wife for a "customer satisfaction survey" on behalf of her bank. I asked them to call back at 4:30pm. Dead on 4:30pm another woman called back. When I asked who she was, she stumbled over her own surname! I asked her the name of the bank and she refused to tell me on the spuriuous grounds of "data protection" - i.e. she didn't know. I told her to remove our number from her database.

Facts International would like to apologise for any inconvenience that may have been caused by our call. All calls made by Facts International are to undertake market research services on behalf of our clients. Accredited by the industry association, the MRS (Market Research Society), all of Facts International’s processes and interviewer techniques are compliant with the MRS code of Conduct and Data Protection Act. Facts International never make sales calls. If you've received a call from us it is probably because you're a customer of one of our clients and are listed in the customer database sample they provided to us. Market research services are used by our clients to improve either their products or the quality of their services and by working with companies such as Facts international, they can obtain independent and impartial customer/consumer opinions from which to help them. If you would like to check our background or speak to someone more about market research, please call the MRS on Freephone 0500 396 999. If you do not wish to be called by Facts International please tell our interviewer, who will immediately remove your details from our call lists so that you will not be contacted again. Facts International has been in business for almost 30 years, and is a respected and professional Market Research Agency which operates from its headquarters in Ashford Kent. Should you wish to speak directly with Facts International please call – 01233 648523 or email enquiries@facts.uk.com When our clients provide us a sample of their customer base, sometimes customers registered with TPS or those listed as ex-directory are contacted. Under market research regulations, we are allowed to do this as there is no legal requirement to screen market research samples against the TPS. TPS exists to prevent unsolicited sales calls. A market research survey is not a sales call and as we are contacting existing client customers, our call is not considered unsolicited as it is reasonable for most companies to call their customers. It is also important, especially for political polls, to gain a representative view of public opinion by speaking to a broad selection of the population. Ex-directory status means that a named customer cannot be traced though telephone directories. This does not preclude us from calling an ex directory customer for research purposes. If research companies did not call ex-directory clients then feedback collected would not be truly representative and it is for this reason that ex-directory customers are included in samples provided. With most calls, Facts International’s interviewers are able to provide details of the organisation on behalf of which they are calling. However, in some instances the client organisation may request that they remain anonymous, which is acceptable under MRS guidelines. An example of this might be when an interviewer introduces themselves as ‘calling on behalf of your bank’ – often an event triggered by a recent branch interaction. It is sometimes important that an interviewer makes sure they are talking to the actual customer of the organisation (e.g. a particular financial services provider) before continuing with the survey as the very fact that a customer has a relationship with a specific organisation may be something they do not wish to reveal to another person answering the phone. Please note Facts International interviewers will NEVER ask you to handover personal account details and neither the interviewer nor company has access to such details at any time. Ok then, you receive a phone call, they know your name and they want you to engage in a survey. This is nothing more than profile building and the likelihood is that this information will be sold on. Let’s turn the tables and even out the playing field a bit. Here’s a profile on the company associated with the nuisance phone number. Facts International Ltd is an independent market research agency based in Ashford, Kent. Nick Lamb sold his stake in the business to the firm’s parent company Chime Communications for £1.7m in 2011; he currently holds the position of Chairman. The next time you’re pulling your hair out when you receive yet another unsolicited phone call, just remember good old Nick still has a good mop of hair. I had a call from the phone number 01233 648 537 today at 19:18. Although I did not answer the call I find these calls a damn nuisance, I would also like to say that I think the way that these telemarketing companies get infomation including phone numbers that people may want to keep private is and should be illegal and should be a criminal offence. I also think that those people who like me get plagued by these pointless calls should have the right to keep personal information such as phone numbers private and have them removed from telemarketing databases without question.
