Called me to advise that I would be receiving a cheque for £4,400 refunding unfair bank charges, but that I would need to pay 10% of this sum as tax to the government, which would be fully refunded. I should obtain a 3V voucher from my local paypoint shop for the sum of £440, which I should hand to the solicitor who would be delivering my cheque, and once the papers had been processed, I would get the refund. 1. Why would the cheque be delivered by a solicitor? 2. Why would tax be payable when it would then be fully refunded? 3. Why would the Government be using 3V vouchers to take tax payments? 4. Why would the call be made on a Saturday? 5. Why would the call be made at all? Surely, the Government sends letters in the first instance, and any refund cheques would come direct to the taxpayer with a detailed breakdown. It was also mentioned to me that I would have the refund of the tax because I am an old age pensioner - which I am not! How low will these people go?
