Indian man calls, says he is from Windows and that my computer is sending out spam messages and has a virus, he has phoned to help me fix it. When asked if he is calling from Microsoft, he says yes. When asked if I can have his number to call him back, so that I know he is calling from Microsoft, he gives me 08455280624. When I ask him for a reference number for the call and confirmation again that he is from Microsoft, he says, no not from Microsoft, they are too busy to deal with this. It's another company. When I ask how he got my home phone number, he says that Microsoft gave it to him. I say that they don't have it. He starts to panic and hangs up. I called British Telecom. They say that this is an international scam operation and therefore there's nothing that they can do about it. They can't stop them phoning you, and that the computer of the scammers just makes numbers up - they don't actually know your number in advance - and that the best thing to do is to tell everyone you know just to ignore it.

Same as Derek in that I want to know if access is ongoing or just a one off connection? Have been advised to change pass words on online banking sites and inform the local Police.

  • Derek - 16-9-2010 10:49:19PM

Elderly mother was conned into giving access through ammyy remote access download. Didn't get any money out of her but left her very upset about online banking etc security. Reported to police who had previous complaints and were gathering info. Anyone know if remote access is ongoing or one off?

Same problems as everyone else here. If you have Skype, use it to call them back a few times. No need to talk to them if you don't want to, just leave it hanging. At the end of a bad day, give them a call and let it all out; scream shout, hurl abuse, whatever you like. On skype the cost of doing this is minimal, and they can't trace your number. If we all do this, they will find it a lot harder to operate their scam, or to recruit operators.

Scam call from aggressive foreign sounding individuals. Demanding money to fix a virus issue in my p.c. I refused to part with any credit card details and put the phone down. Nasty, v scarey.

Some woman rang saying that my computer had sent her a notification that we had a harmfull virus that would burn my computer out very shortly. I asked her to prove who she was and she gave me the phone number. When she rang the house she asked for my partner in her previous married name, of which there would be no record on the computer (which she claimed she got the information off). I rang the number back and she answered with 'hello' no company name or anything. When I told her i knew she was a scam she said ok and put the phone down.

I've had the same conmen dimwits calling me regularly and each time I challenge them they hang up. I have reported them to the Telephone Preferance Service (which my number is listed with them not to recive marketing calls). I suggest others do likewise.

Cold call. Strong Indian accent. Poor English. Telling me my computer it running very slowly & offereing to sort it. Said I'd phone back when I had more time & so got hold of the number + a contact name (Leah Thomas). Would like to alert some authority/phone company, but can't find out who.

  • Keith - 25-8-2010 12:29:41PM

Same approach as the last four, claiming to be from 2 Grow Computer Maintenance Services. gave this number - i've not tried ringing it. obviously a scam; is there someone we can report these shysters to, to protect potential victims?

  • Pat - 21-8-2010 1:44:49PM

Mike from (unintelligible). Following up numerous reports of problems with my computer, specifically with Windows operating system. Very insistent that I should immediately switch on my computer. Like the ladies above, I said I would discuss it with a man, and was surprised when he eventually gave a number.

  • Emma - 19-8-2010 3:24:00PM

Maria from Windows Tech Support. She claimed that they had noticed our computer running very slow & tried to persuade me to log on so that she could show me what the problem was. I reiterated that I wasn't aware of any such problem, saying that I would be speaking to my husband about it. She then thanked me for my time & put the phone down (I was actually surprised to get a number as in my experience they usually just put the phone down).

  • Rosemary - 16-8-2010 3:32:29PM

Foreign man from, sounded like, 'True gro' Computer Maintenance Ltd, tried to tell me that my computer was reporting errors and had a very serious virus. He was trying to get me to log onto my computer. Refused and said I'd get my husband to call back. He rung off.

  • Norman - 11-8-2010 12:48:05PM

'Jack' from 'windowstechsupport' trying to tell me my computer was running slow and had been infected with viruses. Scammer.
