My mother-in-law received a telephone call from a man with what she thought was a very strong German accent saying that there was something wrong with her computer and that she had downloaded some sort of virus from the internet. She doesn't use the internet as she doesn't know how. The computer has been disconnected for several months from the internet so highly improbable. Luckily she didn't give him any information and called me first.
Chap called up from Windows Operating Centre, or Windows Service Centre or something. Foreign accent, said his name was Steve Johnson. Said address of the company was 92 Acre Lane, Brixton, SW2 5QN. He said my computer was sending out spam messages. Didn't let him get as far as giving me any instructions. Checked Google, nothing sensible at this address.
Had exactly the same phone call from 'Alan' claiming to be from 'Windows Operating Centre'. When he told me that they had received errors reports from my computer and that I needed to type something into the 'run' box, I got suspicious. All he had was my initial and surname and postal address - no info on my ip address. Couldn't tell me the name of the company that paid his wages and was insistent that I typed in instructions onto my PC. He gave me a telephone number - the one above, but with the final digit incorrect. Beware, they are hackers - don't do anything over the phone!!
Called the other day - husband said he didn't deal with PC, so I was called today at 9.30 am by an foreign-sounding man calling himself "Shaun Hayden". He said he was a service provider on behalf of the Windows Helpdesk, and that they had received error messages from my computer about malicious files on the system. I asked him how I know he is genuine, and he gave me this number. Straight to Google and pulled up this site... will tell him where to go if he calls again!
A guy with a foreign accent called twice asking me to change settings on my computer. His name is Teese? (sounded like 'tease') He was claiming to be in brixton london. He said he was from microsoft??! Not likely!!! He stated that I have a virus on my computer & he needed to get rid of it.... I immediately rang the Police to make them aware & they gave me an Incident number also telling me that they have had reports of this before.
